EDWARD (ED) COWLEY

AAG Member 1954-1955 (and possibly into the late ‘50s)

While a member of the Albany Artists Group for only a short time, Professor Cowley was one of our most noted members. A World War II veteran he “ushered in a golden age at the University at Albany's art department as chair starting in the 1950s.”
He worked in multiple media, including painting and drawing, jewelry, sculpture, stained glass, and more. He earned a BFA from Columbia University, and his work his widely collected and exhibited. “Cowley assembled an all-star art faculty in the '60s, including printmaker Thom O'Connor, painter William "Bill" Wilson, art historian Mojmir Frinta and printmaker Robert Cartmell — those last two also became his neighbors. “ The Albany Center Gallery gave him a major retrospective in 2012.
