Pam Agan-Smith

Pam is an award winning artist who shows her work in local shows and national/international juried on-line
shows. She is an active member of the Colonie Art League, serving as Show Co-Chair and Membership Chair
since 2019, the Bethlehem Art Association, the Adirondack Pastel Society and the Albany Artist’s Group. Pam’s
first love was art and it was her focus in high school and college. She made a detour into psychology, but
always kept art in her life, painting in her free time and using it in her therapeutic practice with children.
Artist’s Statement:
After I finished my career as a psychologist, which was very “left brain,” analytical, logical, and language-
based, I welcomed the opportunity to devote more time to art which offered me a much needed, “right brain”
massage. I paint mainly with pastels, but recently began also using gouache.  I have attended many workshops
and demos and have had the pleasure to work with Kris Woodward, a brilliant art teacher. I find that many
artists prefer paintings to be loose, suggestive and painterly, but many people like paintings that more closely
resemble a reference image. My art leans toward realism. I love portraiture. My realistic approach has
resulted in numerous commissions for pet portraits and paintings that capture special memories for others. I
am regularly working on several commissions at one time. It is often said that the artist depicts herself
somewhat in every portrait. I hope that is true, even in my pet portraits.
